April 3, 2014: 2014 NAPLAN Testing
The 2014 NAPLAN tests will be held on 13th, 14th and 15th May for students in Years 3 , 5 and 7. Data from these tests is used by the School to track student performance and to identify students requiring support or extension. MCEEDYA provides parents with the opportunity to withdraw their sons and daughters from the NAPLAN tests. The School does not encourage this option but is obliged to inform parents of their rights. If you would like more information about this please contact your class teacher or Mr White (Curriculum Support Teacher) at the School. Information on NAPLAN is available at http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/8017.html
March 27, 2014: Fantastic night at the Bushdance
There has been overwhelming excitement about the Bush Dance last Friday evening. May I thank everyone for supporting this social event and, in particular, the children who displayed exceptional behaviour and joy at the event! To the P&F, School Board, Fr Malachy, Trent and Mary Harm, staff, parents and carers, I thank you for the effort you put in to making sure this event was such a great night!

March 20, 2014: Bullying Ė No Way! Strong Kids Program! Student Protection
The children received wrist bands this week as part of our campaign to prevent bullying in our school and society. Thank you to Mrs Ruth Casey who organized this drive. Our Guidance Counsellor, Mrs Anna Evers-Swindell provided further information to teachers at their staff meeting about Strong Kids, a program to build resilience and social well-being in children.
March 6, 2014: Beginning of Lent
Tuesday saw the Social Justice Ministry cook and serve over 200 pancakes for the OLGC students. Due to the huge demand we had to decrease our serving size to just one. This is unfortunate but we will review the situation for next year. Thanks so much to all our ministry members. With the help of all families the ministry was able to raise $239 for Project Compassion. This will go towards out overall OLGC target of $1400.
Burning of Palms
On Tuesday Fr Malachy lead the school in celebration as we burned the palms held over from last yearís Palm Sunday Mass. It was an excellent opportunity for the children to see firsthand how the ash we use on Ash Wednesday comes to be. I want to thank Fr. Malachy for taking the time out of his busy schedule to be with us and share this special tradition with our staff and students.
On Wednesday we held our Ash Wednesday Liturgy in the Fr John Conway Multipurpose Centre. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on theforeheads of the faithful as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. It was a wonderful celebration with a large number of parents coming to join us.
Our Focus for Lent this year is to:
Reflect: Reflect on our lives and think about how we could be better.
Pray: Pray for Godís strength to help us make change in our life.
Act: Make effective change
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter. According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this forty day liturgical period of prayer and fasting.

February 13, 2014: Survey Outside School Hours Care
In 2010, OLGC surveyed families about having Outside School Hours Care on our school site. While the response was positive, we were just short of necessary numbers to commence this service which, in Catholic schools, is operated by Centacare.
Due to numerous enquiries recently by members of our school community, we now feel it timely to provide another survey to gauge interest in this service.
It is critical that we receive accurate feedback from our families so that plans to introduce this service may proceed. It would be appreciated if you could inform other community members who may be interested in completing this survey.
» Survey and Expressions of Interest form
Please ensure these forms are returned to school by next
Friday 21 February.
Please note: This service cannot proceed without adequate numbers.
February 6, 2014: New Building and 2014 Block Grant Application
Great excitement is evident as the children from Year 2 Yellow, 3 Blue and 3 Yellow settle into their new classrooms. This building program has been very smooth sailing finishing on time and within budget. I would like to thank Mr Mark Gibson, our Architect and Project Manager, for ensuring the success of the project.
Should we be successful this year for further development, as per our Master Plan, it will be great to have Mr Gibson on board again.
January 25, 2014: Welcome to the 2014 School Year
