Catholic Education Week –29 July – 4 August
Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 29 July – 4 August this year. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Discovering New Horizons. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. During Catholic Education Week 2018, Catholic education communities across Queensland are invited to celebrate how they are discovering new horizons.
When Our Lady of Good Counsel was established in 1918, the schooling experience was very different to what we see in our schools today. Our first educators, the Sisters of Mercy didn't have much when they began. Their work was a response to the needs of that day — often educating the poor and marginalized of society, inspired by their founder, Catherine McAuley. Their hard work, dedication and sacrifices ultimately laid a solid foundation for bringing Catholic education into the modern era.
In 2018, we remember our rich history and continue to uphold the values of the Sisters of Mercy to ensure the vibrant growth continues within our school community. We offer a range of academic, cultural and sporting opportunities to… (promising futures – discovering new horizons).
The building of a faith community and our connection with Jesus in our Catholic schools are what truly matter. The sacrifices that have been made in the past 100 years reiterate the importance of that then, just as much as now. OLGC will be celebrating Catholic Education Week with a school mass on Thursday 2nd August at 9am.
