November 28, 2013: 2014 Staffing Update
I am very happy to announce the teaching staff for 2014. The allocation of teachers to classes will be included in the mail to families with report cards early next week. Teachers for 2014 are: Jennifer Brouwer, Ruth Casey, Carol Dennis, Andrea Emerton, Shannon Gilchrist, John Guyer, Sarah Knight, Marissa Ledger, Lara Martin, Michael Mellifont, Laura Murray, Kelli Pacey, Louise Price, Clare Topp, Alexandra Walker, Rebecca White
I would like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to Mrs Chiara Scrougall who has accepted a transfer to Holy Spirit at Bray Park commencing in 2014. It has been a delight having Mrs Scrougall at school for the past three years and we wish her the very best in her new school. Miss Eussen will be teaching at a new school at Springfield in 2014. I would like to thank her for her contribution to OLGC this year and congratulate her on this appointment. We said farewell to Mr Gerard Tuffield last week but he, also, deserves our thanks and best wishes. While Mrs Drew will be a familiar face at OLGC next year, we are looking forward to hearing of the safe arrival of their new baby in early December.
November 14, 2013: OLGC Oktoberfest
A big thankyou to our wonderful Year 4-7 students for their participation and enthusiasm in our Oktoberfest celebrations. Students were kept busy making an Edelweiss hat; completing a quiz; speaking to Opa Schoenauer in German; bell ringing; eating lots of German food; and competing in a Masskrugstemmen competition. Thank you especially to Frau Schoenauer and Tamara Lees for their wonderful help and assistance. Thank you OLGC and Schulte’s Meat Tavern for sponsoring this event for us.
November 14, 2013: Remembrance Day
Our students took the time to
reflect upon the significance of
Remembrance Day. It was a time to
thank and honour those who have
served our country when there has been
unrest and conflict in our world. As we
remembered those who have given the ultimate sacrifice,
we prayed for peace. God of Peace, Jesus your Son shows us
the way to true and lasting peace. As we honour the lives of
those lost through war, help us to live as peacemakers and
seek love and unity for the sake of your kingdom. We make
our prayer in Jesus’ name.
November 7, 2013: Wanted: 2014 Tuckshop Convenor
If you are interested in
taking on this role in 2014 come along to the
P&F Meeting on the 12th November to find
out more information.
October 31, 2013: Ball Games Carnival
The annual interhouse ball games
carnival was held on Tuesday. It was
an outstanding day and we were able
to complete the program just before
the storms rolled through. We had
tremendous support from our
parents and we were truly grateful
for their presence. I want to thank
Mrs Drew for preparing the
staff and students for the
day. Congratulations to
Walsh House for winning
October 24, 2013: St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal
Each year OLGC collects items
to provide to less fortunate
people in our community.
We ask again for
donations of nonperishable
someone this year.
Donations can be left in
baskets in the office.
September 19, 2013: How are we Going? Survey
As part of Brisbane Catholic Education’s compliance processes, each Catholic school is asked to survey the community as a way to improve how things are carried out at school . As such, it would be a greatly appreciated if parents and carers could kindly find a couple of minutes to complete the online survey. A link to this online survey can be found below. Should there be areas that you do not wish to comment on, please just tick the box that indicates that you are unable to comment.
Thank you very much for taking the time to assist us with our planning and improvement at OLGC.
September 12, 2013: A Fantastic Spring Fair!
Who would have thought we would have had an absolutely perfect day for our Spring Fair? For those who were able to come along, I am sure you would agree that the day was fantastic. It goes without saying that the hard work of so many ensured the success of the event. Thank you to Mrs Fiona Drew who coordinated the 2013 Spring Fair, to Mr Ian O’Brien our MC, to the P&F and parish who ensured Fiona received as much support as possible. I would like to thank the staff who so ably prepared the students for their class performances and for their great support leading up to the event and on Sunday.
Most importantly, the smiles on the faces of the children told the story. I felt privileged to see so many past OLGC students participating and even offering to assist by selling tickets, cooking and generally supporting this event. I was lucky to have been dunked only once by these senior students. However, many of the younger students found their target. To the extended family members, parish and friends of our community, your presence was very much appreciated.
Please pass on your thanks to the general community members who came on the day to ensure the success of the OLGC Spring Fair.

August 29, 2013: OPTI-Minds at UQ Gatton Campus
Last Sunday saw the following students Harrison S, Paul A, Samual C, Sarah A, Rebekah T, Bernadette M, Kate R, Jackson L, Gus K, Kade K, Anish K, Tia B, Sophia D, Lily A, Justine S, Isobel T, Peter L and Maddie S perform very well at this unique event at which over 74 schools competed. The competition was hard and I must congratulate the OLGC Team “The Immortals” who won a “Spirit of Opti Minds” award at the presentation event. Thank you to Miss Eussen, Mr White, Miss Price and Miss Martin for attending this very important yearly event supporting the students and community of OLGC.

August 22, 2013: Book Week 2013
Congratulations to the students and staff who participated in the Book Week special on Tuesday. What a creative bunch we are! There were so many characters, too many to single out! Mrs Mobbs and her team work tirelessly in the library to ensure students have access to literature for study and leisure. Once again, congratulations to the students (and their creative parents and carers) for your support of this important event.

August 15, 2013: Maths Team Challenge
On Tuesday, Mr Gerard Tuffield, Miss Alex Walker and Mrs Sue Carpenter joined students from 92 other schools for the Maths Team Challenge at Ipswich Girls Grammar School. I thank the students for representing OLGC, their families and themselves with such pride and precision. Well done! Thanks to Miss Walker and Mr Tuffield for preparing the students for this event and accompanying them on the day. Opportunities such as this give a ‘real life’ perspective to Maths by requiring students to work together as a team and solve quite complicated problems together.
August 8, 2013: 4 week until our Spring Fair?
There are only four weeks until our fete! Please feel free to contact the school or Mrs Fiona Drew if you are able to assist with the fete which is scheduled for Sunday.
As you are aware, each class has a stall, so all help is appreciated!
July 23, 2013: Book Week 2013
OLGC will be celebrating Children’s Book Week from 19-23 August, and the theme this year is “Read Across the Universe”. On Tuesday, 20 August, there will be a dress up parade at morning assembly, and the children are asked to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book or something that fits in with the theme, eg, astronaut, star, planet, spaceship, alien, etc.
Each class will be doing activities during the week based on this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards shortlisted books. The children will also have the opportunity to read/experience these books during their class library times and at playtime in the library if they wish. We look forward to an adventure-filled week and to seeing some imaginative and creative dress-ups at the parade on Tuesday the 20th!
July 23, 2013: Can you help at the Fete?
Can you help with any of the following?:

July 18, 2013: Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across
Queensland from 21-27 July this year.
This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of
Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take
place in Catholic schools every day.
The theme for this year’s
celebrations is: Making a
Difference… inspired by Jesus.
Catholic schools strive to make a
difference in the lives of
individuals and in the wider
community by challenging young
people to live out the message of
Jesus and to reach their full
potential as compassionate,
contributing, life-giving members of society.
Students are nurtured to develop a commitment to social
justice and a critical social consciousness, and are prepared
for global responsibilities through stewardship of the
Like other Catholic schools, we strive to be a welcoming,
inclusive, and connected community that values diversity
and treats each student with dignity, enabling them in turn
to promote and respect the dignity of all.
During Catholic Education Week 2013, Catholic education
communities across Queensland are invited to celebrate
and share how they are ‘Making a difference …. inspired
by Jesus’ in the lives of their students and within their
There are 296 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate
around 140,000 students and employ almost 17,000
teachers and staff and most will celebrate Catholic
Education Week in some way.
Our school is planning a number of activities during the
week and we hope you are able to join in the celebrations
with us. There will be a whole school Mass celebrating
Grandparents in Catholic Education Week at 9.15am on

June 21, 2013: 2014 Uniform Orders – Due July 19, 2013
2014 uniform order forms were sent home yesterday. In 2013 we moved to a pre-order system for all of our school uniforms due to a change in arrangements with our uniform supplier. This new system has made the purchase of uniforms more efficient as we now rely on actual orders rather than trying to estimate the numbers of uniforms required. This is a ONE OFF ORDER. The uniform shop will only carry limited numbers of ALL uniforms – winter and summer. We cannot guarantee to stock all uniforms in all sizes all of the time. We urge all families to place an order by July 19 to ensure delivery by the end of the school year.
June 6, 2013: Help for the OLGC Spring Fair
Many of our Fete stalls need small items that we can all start collecting to send into school.
Our stall convenors would
welcome donations of:
Jars – Full or empty cleans ones,
Plant Pots – Empty,
Plant Cuttings or Seedlings,
Plastic Shopping Bags,
Trash & treasure,
June 6, 2013: Parent Teacher Interviews
Reporting to parents is an important part of the school curriculum. At Our Lady of Good Counsel, reporting at the end of semester one involves an interview for all parents with the class and specialist teachers.
At the interview, your child’s academic, behavioural, social and developmental progress will be discussed in light of the written report.
Parent-Teacher interviews will be held for Prep to Year 7 from 3:30pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday 9 July, Wednesday 10 July and Thursday 11 July, 2013. Interviews will be of 15 minutes duration.
For these interviews we are continuing to use our internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save time for parents, staff and students! Access to PTO will be available from 4pm Tuesday 11th June.
Using this system you will be able to book the interview times that suit you best from any internet-connected computer. A computer will be available in the office during school hours if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere. Letters have been sent home providing details on how to access the system. Your username and pin are attached to this letter.
May 30, 2013: Confirmation and Communion
The church was full of life on Tuesday night as students celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation. This weekend sees the sacrament of Holy Communion being received by the children and one of our mothers. Thank you to Mr White and Miss Eussen who have been preparing the children on this very important faith journey. I know you will join with me in praying for and welcoming these new members of our Catholic church.
May 30, 2013: Fun at the Disco
The disco on Friday night was such a wonderful event. No doubt many children and teachers spent Saturday recovering after so much dancing. Thank you to Mary and Trent Harm and their team who worked in the tuckshop during the evening providing refreshments for the children. Thank you to the staff who ensured the children were able to enjoy a safe and exciting evening.
May 23, 2013: Annual Catholic Campaign
This week you should receive a letter from Archbishop Mark Coleridge asking you to participate in the 2013 Annual Catholic Campaign. The Campaign is so important for the work of the church, and the school community so you are asked to please consider giving generously. The ministries supported by the Campaign provide services that could not be delivered by one parish or school alone. They are ministries that need the support of all schools and parishes in the archdiocese. By sharing a financial gift, you will make a difference to the lives of thousands of people in South East Queensland who are supported through programs that teach, heal, support, nurture and feed. Please give what you can. Visit www.catholiccampaign.com.au to make a gift. (Envelopes available at the office)
May 23, 2013: Sporting Achievements
Congratulations to Meleia S (Yr 3) and Daniel S (Yr 4) on their participation and success in the Weet Bix Triathalon last weekend in Brisbane. Well done!
Another exciting event was the Rugby League team who played against St. Joseph’s Stanthorpe at Warwick on Monday afternoon. It was a thrilling game with the boys playing their hardest and eventually overcoming the Stanthorpe team 22-16. The team is now included in the Super 6 Competition in Toowoomba next Thursday. I must congratulate Mr White who has been training the team and who organised the new jerseys which looked very smart on the boys.
May 16, 2013: Mother's Day Celebrations
At school we were able to acknowledge the marvellous roles these significant women play in our lives by having a special morning tea and stall. I would like to thank Mrs Rosa Sims and her tuckshop team for sharing the tuckshop facility with us last Friday. We were able to make these mothers feel special by including them in our gathering. Thanks also, to Mrs Tanya Toohey and her helpers, who organised the very successful Mother’s Day stall.

May 2, 2013: Year 3 - Looking after Leaf Litter
This week the two year three classes donned protective glasses and rubber glasses and took up magnifying glasses and plastic tubs in search of creatures inhabiting the leaf litter and top soil of our school environment.
The activity was part of the year three’s science unit “Feathers, fur or leaves”. Students recorded their findings and graphed their results. No wildlife was harmed in the process of the study with all collected specimens being returned to their natural habitat at the end of the day.
The children had a great time and learned lots, thanks to the availability of the fabulous new resources contained within one of the science kits recently acquired through the support of the OLGC Parents’ and Friends’ Association.

March 21, 2013: Year 2 Excursion to UQ Gatton
Last Thursday Year 2 went on an excursion to the
University of Queensland. This excursion connected
with our History unit as we have been learning about
local historical sites. The university has been in
Gatton for over 100 years and has a number of
interesting sites. The children learnt about some of the
structures at the university, and discovered how they
are significant. The staff at the university also shared
some funny stories of the pranks past (and current)
students have played, involving some of the sites!

February 21, 2013: Twelve in a row! Lockyer Zone Swimming Carnival
Well done to the OLGC Swim Team on their outstanding team performance at the Lockyer Zone Swimming Carnival last Friday. This year’s team took out the Overall Point Trophy and the Aggregate points Trophy for the 12th Year in a row. It was an outstanding effort and a credit to the children. The long hours they and their parents put into swimming lessons and training is a huge commitment and very worthwhile. It was awesome to see the number of children willing to have a go at as many events as possible. A special mention goes to Caitlin Nolan who broke and set two new pool records in the girls 12 years 100m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle.
February 21, 2013: New School Resources
I am pleased to advise that a variety of new resources have been purchased to enhance the teaching and learning of students at OLGC. During the holidays, over $6000 was spent updating our Maths resources. Last week, we ordered 24 new lap tops as part of a grant we received from BCE.
In addition to this, the P&F last week contributed funds for the purchase of 20 ipads, docking station and trolley, Science Curriculum support materials, portable speaker system and a new mower which arrived yesterday.
To commence a school year with such an injection of resources is wonderful and I thank all involved in making this happen.
Our next venture is the 2013 SPRING FAIR which, over many years, has been an opportunity to gather as a community and also to raise funds for further resources at OLGC.
February 14, 2013: Opening School & Year 7 Induction Mass
The Opening School and Year 7 Induction Mass on Tuesday morning saw us welcome in a new school year and congratulate our new Year 7 school leaders. Already our leaders are keen to get their respective projects up and running and, no doubt, they will be inspired when they attend the Halogen Leadership Day at the Convention Centre soon. I congratulate the Year 7 students for their very well prepared speeches that were presented on Monday morning. Congratulations to all our Year 7 Leaders:
