 Parental Involvement

Parents and the Catholic SchoolOLOGC_011 (Small).JPG

‘... parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children. Their role as educators is so decisive that scarcely anything can compensate for their failure in it’
[ Gravissimun Educationis ]

‘... the renewal of the Catholic School must give special attention both to the parents of the pupils and to the formation of a perfect educating community’

Home - School Liaison
The education of each child is a joint responsibility that is greatly enhanced by maximum co-operation of all involved. The staff of Our Lady of Good Counsel is aware of their responsibility and endeavour to foster a meaningful and helpful liaison with the parents of each child. Therefore parents are:-

  • Expected to attend parent-teacher meetings to meet their child’s teacher and be familiar with class/school policy, procedures and programs.
  • Encouraged to make an appointment to see the teacher whenever they feel it is necessary - outside class times.
  • Invited and encouraged to join in celebrations of class/school liturgies, special events and sports days.
  • Requested to join programs where the school and/or teachers assist them in their role as the first educators of their children.
  •
  • Encouraged to come along to the monthly meetings of the P & F and support organised activities.
  •
  • Requested to read newsletters and news updates from the school to keep informed of activities and policies.
  •
  • Encouraged to communicate anything that may be helpful in understanding and caring for their child. They will be assured that confidential matters remain that way.
  •
  • Reminded that the school exists for their children and that full support of philosophy, policy and procedures will benefit all.
  •
  • Asked to assist teachers in whatever ways they can - especially in developing curricula and working with the staff to provide the best education we can offer the children.

P & F Association

The school has a very active P & F Association that works diligently each year to provide essential support to the school in many ways. Most recently major projects have included the installation of a new playground facility, completion of air-conditioning of all teaching areas and installation of interative tv's and technology throughout the school.  The major project towards the end of 2014 was the construction of a disabled ramp to the school ovals.  The P & F also funded the purchase and installation of a new fence along Spencer Street.

The executive committee consists of seven parent members.  Each family pays a P & F Levy which is included in the school fees. This levy is in lieu of having small fundraising activities such as pie and chocolate drives, raffles, fun runs etc. The major fundraising activity for the P & F is its biannual school fete.

The P&F general meetings are held every 4th and 8th Tuesday of each term with the AGM held in conjunction with the November general meeting.

How can you help?

We invite parents and carers to attend P & F meetings.  The meetings are generally short and enable parents to have input into the operation of the Association and to be informed of school activities and policies. For most meetings a dedicated agenda is presented to parents via the school newsletter prior to the meetings ensuring meetings do not run overtime and issues not presented in the agenda, prior to the meeting, are held over to the next meeting.

Fete:

Every second year, the Parents & Friends Association has a fete.  The next fete is scheduled for 2017. An elected convenor acts as the chairperson of the fete committee and is responsible for co-ordinating the event. Most of the meetings of the committee are informal and held at a time to suit members.

School Board:

The OLGC School Board plays a significant consultative role in supporting the school community, in particular, formulating school policies which are enacted through the Principal. The Board nurtures the context of student learning which is the responsibility of Teachers and Principal.

The School Board meets every 4th and 8th  Tuesday of each term @ 5:00pm (before the P&F Meeting).
